Congress can act today to protect every American's right to vote -- and ensure that the backbone of our Constitution remains fair, free, and accessible to all.

In 2013, the Supreme Court stripped vital protections from the Voting Rights Act (VRA). Sen. Pat Leahy has introduced a bill to restore them and stop politicians from blocking our votes -- all without running afoul of the Court's decision.

This is our best chance yet to update and modernize the VRA and restore protections that voters have relied on for decades.

When the Supreme Court overturned key portions of the VRA in 2013, partisan state lawmakers smelled opportunity. They passed measures like photo voter ID and cut reforms like early voting and same day registration, making voting harder -- or impossible -- for members of our most marginalized communities.

Politicians gaming the system for their own partisan advantage is nothing new. And newly passed laws in Texas and North Carolina -- both of which are still being litigated -- prove that our nation's legacy of voting discrimination along racial lines continues today.

For almost 50 years, the Voting Rights Act ensured that every American's voice was heard. States with a history of discrimination were previously required to submit proposed changes to voting laws for "preclearance." That practice prevented thousands of discriminatory laws from seeing the light of day.

But as soon as the Supreme Court gutted a key section of that law, those same states got to work enacting the anti-voter laws they couldn't before. These politicians' opportunistic reactions proved it: We need the Voting Rights Act today more than ever.

Please sign our petition and tell your lawmakers to support the Voting Rights Advancement Act. For our democracy to function at its best, we all need to have a voice in it.
