What's ALEC? It's a shadowy group that lobbies for corporate interests at taxpayer expense. Let's expose them today.

We're blowing the whistle on ALEC's tax charade. Common Cause has released new evidence to the IRS proving what's already obvious to most of us -- ALEC is no charity, it's a front for corporations to gain access to legislators and push laws to benefit their private interests.

That's lobbying plain and simple, but ALEC lets its corporate funders write off what they pay as a charitable gift -- making taxpayers pick up the tab for ALEC's lobbying.

In 2012, Common Cause documented ALEC's charade and presented the evidence we gathered to the IRS, demanding that they revoke ALEC's charitable tax-exempt status, fine them for any violations, and make its corporate backers pay the back taxes they owe.

Then, we and our allies at the Center for Media and Democracy gave the IRS new statements by ALEC corporations admitting that they too see ALEC for what it is: a corporate lobby, not a charity. Among the most telling examples:

Pfizer: "Pfizer chose to continue this relationship [with ALEC] because our Company and its stakeholders have benefited directly from the organization's model legislation and resolutions."

Verizon: "Our involvement with ALEC has been focused on legislative issues of direct importance to Verizon."

AT&T: Our "main focus within ALEC has been on state legislation aimed at achieving and maintaining a favorable business climate. . . [O]ur focus has been limited to those issues that may impact our company."

We're not going to stop blowing the whistle on ALEC's lobbying schemes. ALEC is a corporate lobby group, not a charity.

Tell the IRS to do its job -- investigate ALEC and enforce the law!
