Donald Trump is attacking freedom of the press -- banning CNN, New York Times, and others from press briefings.

The First Amendment protects freedom of the press, and Trump can't take that away. Journalists: when you hold Trump accountable, we have your back

Our democracy relies on a free, fair, and adversarial press to hold power accountable. But Donald Trump’s attacks on that principle just hit a new low -- now he’s blocked multiple news outlets from an off-camera press briefing with Sean Spicer.

This isn’t the first time President Trump has attacked journalists he believed were treating him unfairly. During the campaign, Trump pledged to “open up” libel laws to make it easier to sue news organizations -- and just last week he branded them an “enemy of the American People.”

This sort of attack on the free press undermines our democracy. We are not an authoritarian state -- Americans expect the media to hold Donald Trump and anyone else with political power accountable.

Remember, Trump is a skilled manipulator of the media -- he was a TV personality for decades, and relied heavily on free cable news coverage during a crowded primary. He urges his supporters to rely only on friendly news sources like Fox News or bloggers like Breitbart (formerly run by top Trump advisor Steve Bannon) that aren’t news sources at all -- and brands everything else “fake news.”

Now, Trump wants to use White House access and outright intimidation to try to make the press  do his bidding. But if We The People rally to the defense of a free press, and demand that they continue to watchdog the Trump administration, his plan won’t work.

That’s why it’s so important to take this pledge today to oppose Donald Trump’s attacks on the free press and stand in solidarity with journalists that hold Trump accountable. Please add your name today.
