Common Cause Recommends Legislation to Create Legal Defense Funds for NYC Public Officials

Today, Common Cause released a comparative analysis of Legal Defense Fund (LDF) models across the country and recommendations for New York City. A framework does not currently exist in New York, creating a policy gap in the campaign finance law. The paper was co-authored by Michael Halberstam, Senior Research Fellow at the Center for Law and Economic Studies at Columbia Law School.

Common Cause New York Action Team continues to grow

Last night, over 60 people came to our second NYC Action Team meeting. We now have over 250 people who have signed up to be Action Team members, many of them actively involved in volunteer activities. Here in NYC, 4 neighborhood-based working groups are meet regularly, deciding on joint actions to take. Thanks to Eleanor Moretta, our weekly phone bank is going great guns. In the 4 days from Feb. 2 to 5, our NY members called over 500 Common Cause members in red states. We've added the ability for our members to make phone calls from home, which has greatly expanded our capacity. But having 6-8 people in the office on Thursday evenings is wonderfully re-enforcing.
