While Fair Elections seems temporarily stalled in Albany, there is good news at the local level in Buffalo. A core group of Common Cause activists, working closely with activists from other groups and some key Common Council members, are working to design a system of public campaign financing based on providing public matching funds for small donor campaign contributions. Such systems are working well in New York City, Los Angeles and other cities across the country. Recently the Common Cause passed a resolution to set up a citizens' committee to design a workable system for Buffalo's municipal elections. We are looking forward to working out the details for a system tailored for Buffalo with the representatives of other groups named to the citizens' committee.
