Conflicts of interest, built into our current system of campaign funding, are at the root of political corruption. While removing the influence of big money in politics would go a long way towards a more ethical government, there are many ethics reform measures which are needed.
We're proud of our work to help establish the Joint Commission on Ethics (JCOPE), an independent watch-dog over the Legislature, as well as our successful efforts to require more transparent and precise disclosure forms. However, the scope and structure of the JCOPE must be addressed, while also granting greater independence from our state legislature and governor.
Additionally, Common Cause New York supports a full time legislature and a pay-increase, as well as extending legislators' terms from two years to four, and banning all outside income to make sure our elected officials are focused on the people's business only.
