Victories Today at the Roundhouse, With More to Come (Hopefully)!

Common Cause New Mexico is excited to announce that a bill passed the House Floor today, which would allow 17 year olds to vote in primary elections if they will be 18 by the general election.

We Promise, Ethics is Coming!

So we know that we have been on the House floor calendar since Friday – that’s how it goes at the Roundhouse – nothing is in order! But we will be heard tomorrow during the afternoon/evening session.

So call your Representatives – you still have tomorrow morning to leave those messages and ask for their support of HJR5 to create an independent ethics commission in New Mexico.

Monday Movement for Voting

HB138 passed the House tonight 41-26! This fantastic legislation sponsored by Rep. Jeff Steinborn will allow 17 year olds to vote in primary elections if they will be 18 by the general election. Common Cause New Mexico has supported this for a few years and we want to see it pass this time.

Please contact your Senator and ask for their support. As soon as we have committee assignments and a hearing, we will let you know!

And Campaign Finance Fixes Continue

Finally, this afternoon in the House Appropriations and Finance committee, HB105 to improve our campaign finance system passed unanimously!

Rep. Jim Smith and the Secretary of State’s Election Director, Kari Fresquez, have been terrific as expert witnesses and answered a variety of questions from members of the committee. These fixes are critical to full transparency. Another one heads to the House floor!
