BIG WIN OF THE SESSION!

HJR 8 to establish an Independent Ethics Commission passed the House and Senate, then a couple of conference committees hammered out amendments yesterday.

Both chambers agreed, and YOU will now get to vote in the next general election (2018) to create an Independent Ethics Commission in NM!

Common Cause has been working on the creation of an ethics committee in various forms for almost 40 years, and we are so thankful to all the advocates, legislators and people who worked on this issue over the years.

The leadership in both the Senate and House were also instrumental to passage this year – House Speaker Brian Egolf, Senate Majority Leader Peter Wirth and House Minority Floor Leader Nate Gentry – your leadership, support and help in making 2017 the year for ethics in New Mexico was critical, and we thank you for governing NM.

We will send a wrap-up email to all those on our email list next week – CCNM tracked about 80 bills this session, and we want to let you know what kind of movement we saw, and where we are headed next. The ethics commission is just one piece of good government legislation we saw this year, and we are already gearing up for next session!
