More Democracy Reforms

Common Cause New Mexico has worked on several successful campaigns to create public financing systems in New Mexico. We now have them in place in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, and statewide for the PRC, appellate and Supreme Court justices. We are working to fix these laws after a 2011 US Supreme Court decision that held unconstitutional a part of the law that allowed candidates to obtain additional funds when they were outspent by privately financed opponents.

We also continue work for a system of statewide voluntary public financing that would encourage the best and brightest citizens to run for public office and offset the influence of wealthy special interests, and have advocated for an independent redistricting commission in New Mexico to fix our political system that seems dominated by partisan agendas.
