For Immediate Release Statement on Governor Baker PAC Fundraising

Posted on May 2, 2016

Statement of Pamela H. Wilmot, Executive Director of Common Cause Massachusetts in response to the May 1st, 2016 Boston Globe article“Top donors could gain more access to Baker, officials.”

Governor Baker and the Massachusetts Republican Party have already smashed previous fundraising records in our state by catering to big donors and employing fundraising tactics that skirt Massachusetts’ campaign contribution limit laws. Now, in their latest ploy, they appear to be overtly selling access to and influence with the Governor and Lt Governor to Political Action Committees - offering special meetings, calls, and events just for big-donor PACs.

That is unacceptable. Officeholders should not be making special deals for special interests. Fundraising schemes like the one highlighted in the Globe inappropriately tilt government away from average citizens and should be stopped.
