Common Cause Louisiana

Common Cause Louisiana has a long history as an active participant in the drive to make Louisiana government more open, ethical and accessible. A few of the highlights in our state organization's history include:

  • Participated in press conference with The Patriot Majority and their "Stop the Koch Brothers' Greed Agenda Bus Tour" on October 2, 2012 in Baton Rouge and October 3 in New Orleans.
  • Participated in July 4, 2012 Dialogue for Democracy panel organized by Occupy Baton Rouge designed to search for common grounds among varied groups interested in protecting our democracy.
  • In 2012, testified before the Louisiana Senate Committee hearings on education bills recommending changes to the bills to bring more accountability and integrity to the process.
  • In 2007, honored Robert L. Roland, who stepped down as chair and member of the Louisiana Board of Ethics as a result of board-member term limits. Mr. Roland served on the board and its predecessors continuously since his selection in 1981 and continuously served as chair for almost 20 year.
  • At the first CCLA Fall Awards Luncheon, honoring Sec. of State Al Ater for outstanding work in holding elections in New Orleans post-Kartrina/Rita and Sen. Walter Boasso for work in consolidating eight levee boards in the New Orleans area to two (East Bank and West Bank).
  • Helped form the Louisiana Voting Rights Network in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
  • Member, Louisiana Budget Project Advisory Committee formed by Louisiana Association of Nonprofit Organizations (LANO).
  • Participated in the Secretary of State's Task Force on Voting in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
  • Supported the work of the Rebuilding Louisiana Coalition and other groups working to restore, resettle and revitalize areas devastated by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005 -- hopefully, without making the same mistakes.
  • Testified and helped pass two needed reforms in 2004: a bill that will prevent legislators and the governor from collecting campaign contributions while they are legislating; and a bill that will regulate executive branch lobbyists and legislative lobbyists equally.
  • Gave the Louisiana House of Representatives the 2004 Mel Dakin Award for Openness in Government for their work in setting up live and archived online feeds of committee meetings and sessions at the state capitol on their website.
  • Defended Open Meeting & Public Records & Ethics Laws against attacks.
  • Instrumental in Passing Campaign Finance Law 1988.
  • Instrumental in passing the "Gold Cadillac Bill" (to close an ethics loophole "big enough to drive a gold Cadillac through").
  • Partnered with ARP to lead effort to pass the Lobbyist Disclosure Act requiring the first disclosure of lobbyist expenditures in LA. These laws still need to be strengthened.
  • Participated in Help America Vote Act effort.
  • Common Cause Louisiana board members Felicia and Dick received certificates of appreciation from HAVA Advisory Committee.
