Our Work

Common Cause Indiana is a nonpartisan grassroots organization dedicated to upholding the core values of American democracy. We work to create open, honest, and accountable government that serves the public interest; promote equal rights, opportunity, and representation for all; and empower all people to make their voices heard in the political process.

Our redistricting coalition has formed the Indiana Citizens Redistricting Commission (ICRC), a model that will demonstrate how redistricting should be conducted: By a multi-partisan and diverse group of Hoosiers who have no direct interest in the outcome.

The ICRC will hold virtual public meetings around the state to hear what Hoosiers like and dislike about the current districts and what they want to see in the new maps. The public meetings will also help the ICRC identify important communities of interest and how those communities want to be situated in the new districts.

We’ll compile the information we receive through the public hearings and give it to the Indiana General Assembly and ask them to follow the public’s directions when they begin their redistricting process in the fall.

The ICRC will also sponsor a public mapping competition and invite Hoosiers to draw new Congressional and state legislative districts themselves. The maps that the ICRC believes best serve voters will win a cash prize and be used as the baseline to judge the legislative mapping proposals.

This project will bring an unparalleled level of transparency to the redistricting process in Indiana and prove to voters and legislators alike that an independent redistricting process will produce better districts than a process controlled by the legislature.

Make Your Voice Heard for Fair Maps

The Indiana Citizens Redistricting Commission is holding virtual town meetings around the state to take public testimony from voters about what they think about their current political districts and what non-partisan criteria should drive the redistricting process. We also want to hear about important communities of interest around the state and how they should be treated for purposed of redistricting.
