Common Cause Hawaii Names New Board Members

(Honolulu, HI) – Common Cause Hawaii announces the appointment of three new board members to fill its vacancies, effective immediately.

“We are happy to welcome three exceptional individuals to the board – Jared Kuroiwa, Nikki Love, and Burt Lum — who have consistently displayed bold leadership, energy for civic engagement, and enthusiasm for transparency in government. Common Cause Hawaii is working hard to extend its reach and diversify the industries and expertise represented on our board. By engaging new leaders, we can advance and execute our mission of creating a more open, honest, and accountable government at a time of growth,” said Carmille Lim, executive director Common Cause Hawaii.

New directors include:

Jared Kuroiwa is Senior Programmer for Oceanic Time Warner Cable’s Interactive TV. Jared’s professional experiences run the gamut in technology. His educational background started in biomedical engineering with work experience in application programming and software design, focusing on health care. That shifted to management of a small programming department, a jump into broadcast technology, and as the application development lead for a leading payroll outsourcing company.

Nikki Love is the Public Policy Director for the Hawaii Alliance of Nonprofit Organizations. She previously served as Executive Director of Common Cause Hawaii and helped lead the chapter’s rebuilding process which began in 2007. Nikki has worked for the Hawaii State Legislature, City & County of Honolulu, and other nonprofit organizations.

Burt Lum is Executive Director of Hawaii Open Data, a non-profit dedicated to advancing the principles of open data and has more than 30 years in Hawaii’s technology and communications sector. He is an Instructor at University of Hawaii in the Information & Computer Science Department, where he teaches Intro to Social Media. His online activities include social media, community building, blogging, video and audio podcasting, content curation, and citizen journalism. Burt was a technology columnist for the Honolulu Advertiser and currently produces and co-hosts a weekly science and technology show on Hawaii Public Radio called Bytemarks Cafe.

Comprised of now 13 members, Common Cause Hawaii’s board paid special thanks to outgoing director, Larry Gellar, for past service with the organization.
