Election Day Registration

Expanding when and how we register voters is a key step toward making sure every citizen has the full opportunity to vote on Election Day. Early registration deadlines – which usually occur before media coverage heats up on a race or issue and before candidates or groups seek to educate or engage most citizens in the election – act to exclude eligible citizens who otherwise would be eager to vote. Expanding registration strengthens citizen participation in our democracy.

States that allow registration through Election Day have some of the highest turnout rates in the nation. They also see a decreased dependence on provisional ballots (ballots counted after extra checks have occurred) without increases in voter fraud.
