Whatever issue you care about -- social, economic, or civic -- big money is always an obstacle. The millions of dollars poured into our elections by energy companies, pharmaceutical manufacturers, telecommunications firms and other special interest groups purchase access to and influence with our elected officials. Big money allows oil and gas firms and their trade groups to block or water down environmental protections; it helps pharmaceutical companies skew federal regulations away from strong safety standards and toward their own profit; and here locally it allows for-profit companies to get rich on incarceration.
In Colorado, we're fighting back. As we continue to defend our victories establishing contribution limits and campaign finance disclosure laws, we're looking for opportunities to implement public financing of campaigns and working towards a constitutional amendment to control runaway political spending.
