Overview

Colorado Secretary of State Scott Gessler attempted to weaken Colorado’s strong campaign finance laws in 2011 by writing rules that weakened transparency requirements. Colorado Common Cause and Colorado Ethics Watch successfully sued to maintain the laws and ensure that politically active non-profit groups are required to report their activities, and that groups seeking to influence the vote on ballot initiatives have to disclose their involvement in our elections.

We expect these kinds of attacks on transparency to continue  as out-of-state dark money groups grow larger and expand their influence. Simple disclosure of contributions and spending will not bring us political equality on their own, but without it we are blind to Big Money’s influence.
