Legislature Sends Election Day Voter Registration to Governor Brown
Sacramento, CA - The California Legislature approved Assembly Bill 1436, Election Day Voter Registration, authored by Assembly Member Mike Feuer (D-West Hollywood), and has sent the bill to Governor Jerry Brown for signature. This legislation would allow eligible voters to register and vote up to and on Election Day. Current law limits voter registration to two weeks prior to Election Day. Election Day Voter Registration will be used by hundreds of thousands of voters each election when fully implemented.
"Politicians in other states have been pushing new restrictive laws and campaigns to manipulate election results for their political gain. Governor Brown can take a stand for free and fair elections by signing Election Day Voter Registration into law," said Kathay Feng, executive director of California Common Cause. "By signing this one bill, the Governor can substantially increase voter turnout in California."
AB 1436 has enjoyed support of over two dozen public interests and voting rights organizations. If signed by Governor Jerry Brown, Election Day Voter Registration will be implemented after the State certifies a federally mandated voter registration database, better known as VoteCal. VoteCal's expected completion date is 2015.
