Don't let Wall Street block strong consumer protections!

The Dow broke 10,000 again and Goldman Sachs and other investment banks reported healthy profits -- and bonuses. Too bad the rest of us are still feeling the pinch after Wall Street nearly bankrupted the nation, while the regulators slept.

Today, Congress may take a step toward avoiding another meltdown by creating the equivalent of a consumer products safety commission for financial products like subprime mortgages. Wall Street investment banks, with an assist from the Chamber of Commerce, are quietly trying to kill it.

The House Financial Services Committee is voting today on legislation that would create a new federal agency called the Consumer Financial Protection Agency (CFPA), which would have power over a wide range of products, including credit cards and home loans.

It is time Congress put Main Street ahead of Wall Street: Tell your Representative you want the strongest Consumer Financial Protection Agency possible!
