Demand your Senators make bailout accountability the law!

The TARP Reform and Accountability Act would require bailout recipients to provide information about how taxpayer money is used, helping to ensure bailout funds are used as they were intended: to stimulate the economy and help struggling Americans.

The bill passed through the House in January, but months later it still has not been introduced in the Senate, and the longer it stalls, the more likely it becomes that we will face another AIG-like instance of bailout fund misuse.

I'm sure you were as outraged at I was by the recent revelation that failed executives at AIG were receiving $450 million in bonuses drawn from the $170 billion bailout AIG accepted from the government last year. It was a gross abuse of taxpayer trust, a gross misuse of taxpayer funds, and we can't let it happen again. As you know, the TARP Reform and Accountability Act of 2009 passed through the House in January. The bill demands accountability from the recipients of bailout funds in a number of ways. For example: * It prohibits paying or accruing any bonus or incentive compensation to the 25 most highly compensated employees; * Requires federal banking regulators to examine annually the use of TARP funds; * Prohibits the use of TARP funds for mergers or acquisitions; * Requires recipients to report the amount of any increase or decrease in new lending. The federal government must put protections in place to ensure that the bailout funds are not just spent, but spent wisely. Luckily, a bill to do just that is lying at your doorstep. Revive the TARP Reform Act today, and pass it quickly on to President Obama's desk. When the bailout money's gone, it's gone. Don't wait any longer to mandate that the bailout be fair, transparent, and in service of the public interest. I, for one, won't accept another AIG.
