Election Reform

Election Protection

During the past few election cycles, California Common Cause and Common Cause chapters across the country have teamed up with the National Election Protection Coalition to election preparedness issues before election day, and run a national election protection hotline for voters to call with any problems they encounter.

Prior to the November, 2008 eleciton, Common Cause produced numerous reports assesing the preparedness level of voting systems in various states.  Those reports, including information on California's rreadiness, are available here:

The national hotline, 1-866-OURVOTE is staffed by trained legal volunteers who answer questions ranging from where a voter is registered to whether they should cats a provisional ballot.  The call centers, located in cities across the country, record each of the calls that come in providing both immediate solutions to voters with solvable problems and gathering a valuable data set for judging the effectiveness of voting systems and processes.

On November 4th, 2008, California Common Cause helped staff call centers in Los Angeles and San Francisco, monitoring voting problems and working with registrars and voting officials to solve problems on the spot.
