In Wake of Environmental Disaster, Rep. DeGette Offers "Insider Briefing" to Major Campaign Donors

Denver—A fundraising invitation for the Colorado Democratic Party offers donors who give $250 or more an “insider briefing” from Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Colo.) about the oil spill in the Gulf and Congress’s plans to prevent it in the future.

“What information on the BP oil spill is worth $250- $1,000 a person and why wouldn’t Rep. DeGette share that information with her constituents for free?” asked Elena Nunez with Colorado Common Cause. “Events like this, where Congress’ corporate backers get information constituents don’t, make it clear that we need to restore our government to one of, by, and for the people by passing the Fair Elections Now Act.”

The Fair Elections Now Act (H.R. 1826, S. 752) gives congressional candidates the option to run competitive campaigns for office on a blend of Fair Elections funds and small dollar contributions, rather than relying on wealthy bundlers to fill their campaign coffers. With Fair Elections, candidates would be accountable solely to their constituents, instead of the wealthy donors funding their campaigns.
