Stephen Spaulding, policy counsel, joined Common Cause in September 2011. Previously, Stephen was a litigation associate at Goodwin Procter LLP, a law fellow at Common Cause, and a law clerk in the Office of Legal Counsel to Governor Martin O’Malley (Maryland). Prior to law school, Stephen was a trial preparation assistant in the Rackets Bureau of the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, where he worked on corruption and racketeering investigations. Stephen has also worked in the offices of Senator Paul Sarbanes, Congressman Steny Hoyer, and the Foreign Press Center of the United States Department of State.
Stephen has been quoted by numerous publications about matters concerning Congress, ethics, campaign finance, and voting rights, including the New York Times, the Washington Post, Salon, Politico, USA Today, Talking Points Memo, the Boston Globe, the Philadelphia Inquirer, and Roll Call among others. He has been a featured guest on numerous television and public radio programs, including MSNBC’s Melissa Harris-Perry, Up with Steve Kornacki, Politics Nation, and CNN’s The Lead. He is the co-author of several reports for Common Cause, and his writing has appeared in Politico and The Hill.
Stephen received his B.A. in political science from Haverford College. He earned his J.D. cum laude from Boston College Law School, where he served as Editor-in-Chief of the Boston College Third World Law Journal, now published as the Boston College Journal of Law and Social Justice. He is a member of the bars of the District of Columbia and Massachusetts.
