Common Cause touts election finance bill

The national president of Common Cause, a public interest advocacy group, yesterday urged Gov. Linda Lingle to sign a bill creating a pilot project for public financing of Big Island County Council elections.
Bob Edgar, a United Metho-dist preacher and former Pennsylvania congressman, and other activists believe that public financing would help attract more diverse candidates and reduce the influence of private donations in political campaigns. The pilot would begin in the 2010 council elections and run through the 2012 and 2014 elections.

The government reform-minded organization Common Cause has returned to Hawaii for the first time since shutting local operations in 2002.
The local chapter will be led by Nikki Love, director of operations for Community Links, a nonprofit Internet social service, and a former aide to state Sen. Les Ihara.

The national government watchdog group Common Cause aims to remove the influence of big money and special interests on lawmakers as it returns to Hawai’i after a six-year absence.
The nonpartisan advocacy organization relaunched its Hawaii chapter today with a goal to clean up state government.
Bill removes $1,000 cap on contributions

A $1,000 cap on political contributions by corporations would be eliminated under a proposal advancing in the state House.
Critics say the measure would be a step backward in campaign finance reform, while supporters say it clarifies the law to allow corporations to donate the same amounts allowed by individuals.
