McCutcheon Rapid Response Protest or Celebration

When the U.S. Supreme Court issued its disastrous ruling for democracy in McCutcheon v. FEC, protesters took to the streets in over 140 cities across the country just hours after the Court announced its decision. In Boston, some 50 protestors convened at the front steps of the Massachusetts State House to loudly proclaim, "Democracy is not for sale." At the rally, representatives from Common Cause, MASSPIRG, MassVOTE, Sierra Club Massachusetts, Senator Jamie Elridge and Representative Cory Atkins spoke to the crowd demanding immediate and comphrensive reform to fix the problems created by the Court. Election Modernization Passes Senate!

Common Cause Massachusetts strongly supports the comprehensive election modernization bill passed overwhelmingly by the Massachusetts Senate. The bill includes online voter registration and early voting, two provisions passed by Massachusetts House in November 2013, as well as Election Day registration, pre-registration, post-election audits, and permanent voter registration.

These important reforms will make voting more convenient, shorten long lines on Election Day, and increase participation in our elections. But the battle is not over. The bill now goes back to a conference committee where the House and Senate will iron out their differences.

Shine a light on dark money!

A report by CommonWealth Magazine says the Massachusetts legislature may fail to pass the Massachusetts Disclosure Act in time for the 2014 state elections. That means corporations can spend unlimted money to influence elections without disclosing their spending, and Super PACs can spend unlimited money without disclosing their donors in real time. That is unacceptable! It's the voters right to know which special interests are trying to influence their votes.

Tell your state legislators to pass disclosure reform now.

Building a More Perfect Democracy will be held Tuesday June 10, 2014 from 12:15-1:30 at the Omni Parker House in Boston. It will be a great time to connect with old and new friends, to celebrate past victories, and to get ready for the many battles that lie ahead.

Dollarocracy: How the Money and Media Election

Complex is Destroying America

On March 10, 60 Common Cause Massachusetts supporters joined author and journalist John Nichols to discuss his newest book Dollarocracy: How the Money and Media Election Complex is Destroying America with John Nichols. John talked about how “money power” does not just endanger electoral politics; it is a challenge to the DNA of American democracy itself. We thank John, the over 60 guests who joined us in Cambridge, and our event sponsors that made this incredible night possible.
