Common Cause Michigan is back!
Thanks to the support of our members, we are redoubling our efforts to promote transparency, ethics, and accountability in government by reinvesting in our advocacy work in Lansing as well as in several local governments across Michigan.
Your watchdog of government ethics is back – fighting for ethical behavior from our state and local decision-makers while closely monitoring our state budget and how federal stimulus dollars will be allocated and spent in Michigan as part of the National Recovery Plan.
We are off to a strong start advocating for several reforms in Michigan. Among the highlights:
• The Michigan House of Representatives passed with overwhelming bi-partisan support, the Common Cause-endorsed measures to ban legislators from becoming lobbyists for two years and require conflict of interest disclosure for state and local decision-makers;
• Common Cause MI is actively working with the Michigan Election Coalition to ensure that No-Reason Absentee Voting and other election protection measures are adopted by the Michigan Legislature this year and enforced by the Michigan Secretary of State and Attorney General; and
• Common Cause MI is working to end the "pay-to-play" politics that have plagued local governments like Detroit, as well as state government.
Clearly, there is no shortage of opportunities to promote long-overdue changes for how we do business in Michigan, and no shortage of work ahead to make sure these reforms are enacted and enforced.
We look forward to working with you to bring transparency to government, protect people’s right to vote and end pay-to-pay politics in Michigan once and for all.
