Opening Up the Legislature
Ideas for a more user-friendly State Capitol

The 2010 legislative session will be an especially important one, and it's critical that Hawaii citizens actively participate in the process.  Common Cause Hawaii and other citizen groups have proposed four ideas for a more open and inclusive legislature: webcasting, 3 days notice for hearings, online bill amendments, and more complete committee reports.

Organizations in support of these proposals include: Common Cause Hawaii, League of Women Voters of Hawaii, Americans for Democratic Action Hawaii, Sierra Club Hawaii Chapter, Blue Planet Foundation, Right to Know Committee, Citizen Voice, and Hawaii Pro-Democracy Initiative. Contact us if your organization would like to help.

Public Financing for Congress
Fair Elections Now Act

Reps. Abercrombie and Hirono have signed on! The Fair Elections Now Act would provide qualified congressional candidates limited public funding to run a viable campaign in exchange for agreeing to take no contribution larger than $100.

Health Care and Special Interests
Bob Edgar speaks to Common Cause Hawaii

Mahalo to everyone who attended our September 14 event featuring Bob Edgar, president of national Common Cause.  Bob visited Honolulu from Washington, DC to speak about the influence of health industry special interests -- the huge amounts of lobbying and campaign contributions and how it's affecting our current health care debate.  Read the full report by Common Cause here.

A special thank you to the generous donors who helped make this event possible:  Chris Conybeare, Grace Furukawa, Beverly Keever, Ken & Shaunagh Robbins, John & Dawn Webster, Hogan Entreprenuers, and Loomis-ISC.  Mahalo!
