Index of Gambling Interests

Several lawmakers have requested a complete list of entities that constitute "organized gambling." Common Cause Maryland has tried to accommodate this request by creating the following webpage to serve as a guide to major gambling interests.

However, while this list may serve as a guide, it is important to note that gambling money may enter through entities not included on the list. Common Cause Maryland is asking only for a good faith pledge to not knowingly take contributions of this kind.

Text of Pledge Letter:

Dear Delegate / Senator,

In November, voters will make an important choice at the polls: whether to legalize slot machine gambling at five locations in Maryland.

The slots issue has been debated for over a decade by the General Assembly. Now that the decision has been put before the people in a referendum, Maryland must do all it can to ensure a fair process and meaningful public debate.

Common Cause Maryland takes no position for or against slots at this time. However, we are committed to seeing that the issue is debated on the merits and that both lawmakers and citizens make the critical decisions involved free from monetary influence.

In April, we called for both the pro- and anti-slots campaigns to forswear money from organized gambling interests. As you know, there are large corporate gambling concerns on both sides with vested interests in the success or defeat of the referendum.

As a member of the General Assembly, you will also have a role to play in the referendum, whether you are in favor, opposed, or neutral. To ensure that Maryland gets the honest debate that it deserves, we are asking all Senators and Delegates to refuse political donations from organized gambling at least until the conclusion of the referendum.

We do not condemn any member of the General Assembly for their position on slots. Our goal is to ensure a democratic decision-making process untarnished by political contributions from interested parties. We will publish the results of this survey by June 17, 2008.

We urge you to show your support for good government and sign this pledge.

Sincerely,

Ryan O’Donnell
