Our organizations jointly urge the Governor and the Legislature to act now on proposals to:

  • Reform the way electoral campaigns are funded and conducted
  • Change the way legislative district lines are drawn
  • Improve the transparency, accountability and rules of the legislature

We commend the legislature for passing limited reforms and an on-time budget in 2005 and again in 2006.  Certainly, New York State faces numerous challenges, but fundamentally reforming the way New York State government functions is among the highest.

We urge you to consider the issues posed and solutions recommended by our organizations.  The legislation and rules changes we propose would dramatically boost public accountability and openness in New York State government.  If enacted, such a package of reforms would overhaul the way governmental business is conducted in Albany and would demonstrate to New Yorkers that real change is underway.

We believe that the plans put forward by our organizations offer a real framework for reform and we collectively urge you to begin this important debate.

While member organizations do not necessarily have positions on each of these issues, we are, as a coalition, committed to restoring the democratic process in New York state government.  Therefore, we support debate on these reforms and we endorse the April 23rd “People’s Public Hearing.”  We urge you to do so as well.
