  • Somerville considers instant runoff voting (IRV)

Somerville’s Charter Advisory Committee is recommending changes in city government, and instant runoff voting (IRV) is among the proposals under consideration. IRV, which allows voters to rank candidates by preference, is a proven system used by the Irish to elect their president, the Australians to elect their congress, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to select Oscar recipients. Many cities in the U.S. are adopting IRV to cut costs, promote democracy, improve voter turnout, and reduce negative campaigning.

Click here to read more about IRV or, if you live in Somerville, click here to write an e-mail to the committee encouraging them to recommend IRV.
