Pennsylvanians Challenge Partisan Gerrymandering of Congressional Districts in New Lawsuit

June 15, 2017; Press Release, Status Update

The Public Interest Law Center filed a lawsuit in state court today on behalf of the League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania and individual voters challenging the state’s congressional districts as an illegal partisan gerrymander. League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania v. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is one of a series of suits nationwide challenging extreme partisan gerrymanders that have left millions of Americans with no opportunity to elect the candidates of their choice. Plaintiffs in the Pennsylvania suit argue that the state’s congressional map violates the Pennsylvania Constitution. Common Cause Pennsylvania, a leader in the Fair Districts PA coalition, played a key role in the recruitment of several individual plaintiffs. An individual plaintiff lives in each of the state’s 18 congressional districts.

In Opposition to Sessions Nomination, Common Cause Activists Deliver Petitions to Senate Offices from Alaska to Florida

January 24, 2017; Press Release, Status Update

Today, Common Cause activists in a dozen states are delivering petitions urging their U.S. Senators to vote against the nomination of Sen. Jefferson Beauregard “Jeff” Sessions III (R-AL) to serve as U.S. Attorney General. For decades, Sen. Sessions has been an outspoken critic of the Voting Rights Act, one of the nation’s most critical pieces of civil and voting rights legislation, which paved the way for an inclusive democracy. As Attorney General, Sessions would be charged with deciding how and when to enforce the Voting Rights Act, which he has repeatedly condemned as an “intrusive piece of legislation.” The Senate Judiciary Committee is expected to vote today to send the nomination forward to a vote of the full Senate in the coming weeks.

Marcellus Money - Deep Drilling, Deep Pockets Update 2014

November 13, 2014

The Marcellus Money project has been tracking the natural gas (or “fracking”) industry’s campaign contributions and lobbying expenditures in Pennsylvania since 2009, when the Marcellus Shale natural gas boom was moving into high gear. Pennsylvania was the center of public and private excitement and scrutiny over fracking practices and land leases, and the Marcellus Money project found that industry political action committees (PACs) and executives were continuously contributing to the campaigns of Pennsylvania candidates. This 2014 update to the project re-focuses the period of analysis to 2007 Cycle 1 " 2014 Cycle 5 (previous releases included data from 2001 forward). The data and more information can be viewed online at www.marcellusmoney.org
