Mandating Local Special Elections - SIGNED INTO LAW

February 26, 2015

This bill requires that, if a city council fills a vacancy in a local elective office by appointment in the first half of the term of office, the appointee holds office only until the next general municipal election at which point a special election is held.

Prohibiting Low-Turnout, Off-Cycle local Elections - SIGNED INTO LAW

February 25, 2015

This bill, beginning in 2018, requires local governments to conduct their local elections on statewide election dates, when turnout is generally higher, unless voter turnout for the regularly-scheduled local elections is at least 75% of the average voter turnout for previous statewide general elections.

Common Cause, the Campaign Legal Center, and Duke University’s Center for Political Leadership, Innovation, and Service (POLIS) will host a national conference on redistricting reform that will bring together academics, litigators, and activists from around the country to discuss strategies for ending the manipulation of legislative districts for political advantage. The conference will take place March 2-3 in Durham, North Carolina at Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy.

Sacramento – Today, the Legislature showed bipartisan support for Senate Bill 1107 (Allen, Hancock, Chiu, Gonzalez), which would enable the state and local governments to address special interest money in politics with citizen funded election systems by amplifying the voices of small donors and everyday voters. California Common Cause is a sponsor of this bill.
