Extending CVRA to District-Based Elections - VETOED

January 26, 2015

This bill would provide stronger protections to minority groups against gerrymandering and other voting rights infringements by allowing them to challenge district based elections that impair their ability to elect candidates of their choice.

Government Procurement - TWO YEAR BILL

February 27, 2015

This bill would require, for the first time, people who lobby state agencies for government contracts to register as lobbyists. Registered lobbyists are required to file disclosure reports and are subject to additional ethics rules.

This Common Cause California co-written letter begins, 'Dear Governor Schwarzenegger: As you know, we recently sent you a letter expressing our support for improving the integrity of Californians legislative redistricting process (May 31, 2006). In light of the discussions currently underway exploring how best to proceed on this issue, and the significant professional experience many of the signatories on that original letter have had with the redistricting process, we have considered this subject further and offer the following additional thoughts with regard to what we believe would be beneficial reforms to the current process.'

More Transparency Coming to Money in California Politics

September 29, 2016

Today, Governor Jerry Brown signed bipartisan legislation to bring greater transparency to money in California politics. Senate Bill 1349, by Sen. Bob Hertzberg, D-Van Nuys, will direct the Secretary of State to modernize Cal-Access, California’s online system for campaign finance filing and disclosure. California Common Cause was a sponsor of the bill, along with the California Business Roundtable.

California Takes Major Step Toward Citizen-Funded Elections

September 29, 2016

Today, Governor Jerry Brown signed legislation to give citizens a greater voice in California’s democracy. With the U.S. Congress gridlocked, California is leading a wave of pro-democratic reforms passed at the state and local level across the country. Senate Bill 1107, by Sen. Ben Allen, D-Santa Monica, gives local governments and the state the choice to enact citizen-funded election programs. California Common Cause sponsored the bill with the California Clean Money Campaign.
