We, the undersigned groups who collectively represent thousands of Virginians, strongly urge you to send HB 2070, and its identical companion bill SB1424, back to the General Assembly with amendments to significantly strengthen the bills.
Our organizations and civic leaders urge the House of Representatives to amend congressional ethics rules to close a loophole that allows access to the House floor for some former members-turned-lobbyists during ceremonial events, such as the State of the Union address.
Along with a large bipartisan coalition, Sen. Russell Feingold (D-WI), former Sen. Lincoln Chafee (R-RI), and Common Cause are urging presidential and congressional candidates, as well as the media, to dedicate Wednesday, September 17 Constitution Day to constitutional issues and the importance of restoring the rule of law
Americans expect and deserve to know the truth about the Russian attacks on our democracy. Today’s indictments provide more of that truth and hammer home the seriousness of the attacks and the need to support and protect Special Counsel Robert Mueller and his investigation. We are hopeful that these new facts will finally drive the White House and those in Congress who have worked to hamper the investigation to admit the reality and the scope of the attack and the threat from Russia which is ongoing today as we approach our next election.
The admission by Donald Trump’s attorney Michael Cohen that he made the $130,000 payment of apparent hush money to adult film star Stormy Daniels shortly before the 2016 election does not make the Trump campaign’s legal problems go away despite Cohen’s assertions.
The American people must have the truth about the Russia-Trump investigation. The DOJ must work with Intelligence Committee staff of both parties to make any legitimate redactions to the minority memo as soon as possible and then release it. Americans deserve the truth, not a cover-up.
Americans deserve the facts about the Russian attack on the 2016 election and the ongoing investigation, and the White House owes the American people answers. The Trump Administration should move quickly to clear the release of the House Intelligence Committee Democratic members’ response to the Nunes memo. The Republican memo has been widely discredited for cherry-picking facts in an attempt to undermine the FBI and Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation of the Russian attacks. Americans should be presented with the facts, not conspiracy theories hatched by a member of the Trump transition team.
