In the wake of the Trayvon Martin shooting in Florida, and ALEC's connection to the "Stand Your Ground" gun law that for weeks protected the teen-ager's killer, ALEC has been under intense media and public scrutiny. At least 11 major corporations, including McDonald's, Wendy's, Coca Cola and PepsiCo, have announced their departure from ALEC. Common Cause will announce a whistleblower complaint it has filed against ALEC with the Internal Revenue Service based on thousands of pages of ALEC records Common Cause obtained. The documents raise new questions, including legal issues, about ALEC's activities.

Common Cause is a nonpartisan grassroots organization dedicated to upholding the core values of American democracy. We work to create open, honest, and accountable government that serves the public interest; promote equal rights, opportunity, and representation for all; and empower all people to make their voices heard in the political process.
