Coalition Letter to Governor Cuomo urging support for Fair Elections

March 19, 2014

Hon. Governor Andrew Cuomo
NYS Capitol
Albany, New York 12204

Dear Governor Cuomo:

As leaders of national organizations who care deeply about reducing the undue influence of big money in American politics, we write to thank you for your leadership on this issue, and to urge you to do everything in your power to enact publicly financed Fair Elections in this year's New York State budget. Doing so would be the first bold state response to address the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision, and could help spark a much-needed movement across the country and nationally to follow your lead.

Even as we join together to support the Government By the People Act (H.R. 20) introduced earlier this month by Congressman John Sarbanes (D-MD), along with House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and over 100 House members, we look to New York to lead the fight. While both the federal legislation and your own Executive Budget proposal would go a long way to lift the voices of everyday people in the political process through empowering and encouraging small dollar donors, your state is poised to do it first.

We see firsthand how the few who can afford large donations enjoy outsized influence in setting the policy agenda in Washington. In the meantime, the American people continue to lose faith in the ability of government to represent their interests. Your ability to act in New York, to empower small donors and limit the corrupting influence of big money, will put the wind in our sails to get the same done in Washington.

We stand ready to support you in this effort. Please let us know what we can do to assist you in enacting this critical reform.
