News on the state legislatures that Common Cause Oklahoma is working on:

We are excited that two bills have been introduced in the Oklahoma Senate that would provide public financing for campaigns for some offices in Oklahoma . Senate Bill 1974 applies to the election of district and associate district judges, and Senate Bill 2045 applies to the election of the Insurance Commissioner and Corporation Commissioners. Senator Kenneth Corn is the author of both measures, with some assistance from us.

If you know Senator Corn, please thank him for helping us. More importantly, please contact your own state senator and urge him or her to support this important and groundbreaking legislation. If any elected officials should be immune from the conflicts of interest created by soliciting campaign contributions, it is our judges! We expect them to be impartial! And we are all aware of past scandals involving the Insurance Commissioner and Corporation Commissioners. Let’s start ending the influence of money on these people who make decisions that affect all Oklahomans.

Our next Common Cause meeting will be Saturday, December 1st, at 9:30 A.M. at the Campus Christian Ministry in Norman.

Our next Common Cause Board meeting is May 12th at 9:30am at the OKC Library.

Go see Taking Oklahoma for a Ride http://vocallocals.net/. It's a movie on how important light rail is to Oklahoma. It is co-produced by Oklahoma Common Cause members. Check it out! Go to the projects button on the left side of the Vocal Locals website.

Our 2007 Annual Meeting of Common Cause Oklahoma was a success! Our Featured Senator Corn, Tuesday, Feb. 27th spoke about the need for legislative reforms that resonate with many Common Cause members, such as redistricting and clean elections.

Common Cause Oklahoma welcomed Sen. Kenneth Corn (D- Poteau), as the keynote speaker at its 2007 annual meeting.  Sen. Corn has introduced legislation empowering citizens; including a proposed redistricting reform, a bill to form a citizens' oversight group for audits, and a resolution to require paper ballots.  More than 20 members joined us for lunch and found out how Common Cause is working to hold power accountable in Oklahoma.

We re-elected all the officers from the year before.

We appreciate all the board members who made this year's Annual Meeting happen!
