Letter to Speaker Hastert Re Ethics Rule Changes in the House of Representatives

April 27, 2005

Letter to Speaker Hastert

Common Cause sent this letter to Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL). Identical messages were also sent to Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), House Ethics Committee Chair Doc Hastings (R-WA), and Ethics Committee ranking Democrat Alan Mollohan (D-WV).

Dear Speaker Hastert:

We are gratified by press reports today that you are considering rescinding the House ethics rules changes pushed through in January.

However, the only acceptable outcome will be for the House to repeal all the rules changes. Rolling back only some of the rules will not work.

Once previous rules are restored, the Ethics Committee will still be minimally functional. The House will then need a bipartisan task force to review the system of monitoring House ethics.
