Read the Letter to Judiciary Comittee

For one of the first times in our history, Common Cause is opposing a cabinet nomination, that of Sen. Jefferson Beauregard “Jeff” Sessions III (R-AL) to serve as U.S. Attorney General. We deem him unfit to serve as the nation’s top law enforcement officer.

Sessions CallJeff Sessions’ has spent his career fighting laws that he would be charged with enforcing as Attorney General of the United States. The laws he has fought and criticized are laws that strengthen our democracy. As Attorney General, Sessions would be in charge of enforcing civil rights and voting rights laws he vehemently opposes. After being denied a federal judgeship because of his racist comments and actions, he has spent his political career fighting against laws that protect civil liberties and the right to vote for minorities.

The Voting Rights Act is on the chopping block if Senator Sessions becomes our next Attorney General. Throughout his career, Sen. Sessions has been an outspoken critic of the Voting Rights Act, one of this country’s most critical pieces of civil and voting rights legislation, which has helped increase participation in our elections by protecting every American’s fundamental right to vote.

Senator Sessions’ history and policy positions make clear that he will not uphold fair and equal rule of law for every American as Attorney General. The job of the Attorney General is to enforce the law as it stands. Yet, Sen. Sessions’ is a critic of so many laws he will be in charge of enforcing. This puts every Americans’ basic rights and civil liberties at risk.

A Republican-controlled Senate already rejected Senator Sessions once due to his racist past. In 1986, a Republican-controlled Senate rejected Sessions’ nomination to U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Alabama after listening to extensive testimony about controversial racist statements made and actions taken by Sessions.
