ALEC was founded in the 1973 and has been a major force for corporations and special interest groups in the passage of thousands of state laws since then. But until 2011, it operated almost completely in secret. Common Cause is part of a coalition of organizations that have brought ALEC into the open, gathering and disseminating thousands of pages of ALEC’s own records to document its legislative tactics and impact.
Headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, ALEC is funded almost exclusively by its corporate members and corporate-connected foundations. Its legislative portfolio has included bills to privatize public schools and prisons, weaken voting rights, eviscerate clean air, clean water and other environmental laws, cripple public worker unions and endanger public safety.
More than 100 major corporations, including McDonalds, Walmart, Amazon, General Electric and Google have now severed ties with ALEC.
