Today's campaigns are so expensive that often only the wealthy -- or those willing to accept the strings attached to large campaign contributions -- can afford to run for office.

"Fair Elections" programs allow candidates to rely on small donations from individuals and matching grants from special, tax-supported funds.

Common Cause has spearheaded the adoption of fair elections plans in states, counties and cities across America. We're working to pass the "Government by the People Act" and the "Fair Elections Now Act" to create a small donor-based public financing system for elections to Congress.
