This is a tough time for democracy reformers in Washington. So I was particularly pleased last week to get away from the national capital for a few days to meet Common Cause activists – and some new recruits – in Arizona and New Mexico.

The Florida legislature completed the 2017 regular legislative session on Friday, May 5th. A one-day special session ended around 8:30 p.m. on Monday, May 8th with passage of an $83 billion state budget. The legislature needed the special session because it didn’t come to a final agreement on the budget in time to allow for the 72-hour waiting period between printing the budget and voting on it.

The Florida legislature has completed the ninth week of the 2017 regular legislative session. It should have been the final week of the session, but lawmakers were unable to reach an agreement on the budget in time to meet the required 72-hour period between finalizing the budget and voting on it.

The Florida legislature has completed its eighth week of the 2017 legislative session. There is now one week left before the end of the regular session. Common Cause Florida has a number of priority issues that are seeing action in legislative committees, the Senate and in the House of Representatives.
