Assistant Director, Common Cause New York

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The Assistant Director of Common Cause/NY reports to the Executive Director, and is responsible for implementing the goals and priorities of the organization, ensuring the efficient functioning of the chapter.  The position requires a well-organized, detail-oriented self-starter who is calm under pressure and comfortable in a high energy environment; must have the initiative to take on complicated projects and learn new things independently. 

RESPONSIBILITIES: The position involves many different tasks and roles:

  • Website/E-Activism/Writing. The Assistant Director has primary responsibility for maintaining the website.  With help from the Executive Director, writes action alerts to members, web-site copy, letters to the editor, fact sheets and handouts, e-newsletters, invites, and creates flyers.  Will help organize and mobilize membership in support of the Common Cause mission both through social media and community-based events.
  • Supervising/Research.  Supervises and recruits office volunteers and interns.  Maintains intern and volunteer morale, answers questions, and sets tasks cooperatively with Executive Director.  Initial point of contact for the office and the face/voice of the organization to visitors and callers. Conducts research as needed.
  • Administration/Technology. The Assistant Director is responsible for coordinating office operations.  Tasks include managing and organizing volunteers and maintaining small office systems, as necessary to ensure a smoothly functioning small office, including tracking expenses and paying bills, transmitting expenses and check back-up to the national office, coordinating financial and membership record-keeping with the national office; and improving and maintaining databases.
  • Media/Lobbying. Keeps track of media coverage of the organization and disseminates. Coordinates with media consultant to respond to press inquiries and send out press releases. May make occasional media appearances and lobby the legislature on a fill-in basis.  Primary responsibility for reporting lobbying activities

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants should have demonstrated dedication to Common Cause mission of open, accountable, and ethical government.  Bachelor’s degree, minimum 1-2 years’ experience in a position with similar skill requirements in a non-profit or political campaign. High proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word/Excel/Outlook). Working knowledge of a graphic design program desired and video/photo editing tools a plus. Flexible and able to work as part of a small team.  As the position involves significant contact with members, interns, and volunteers, an applicant must be affable, people-oriented, and have a confident telephone demeanor and solid grammar skills. Numerate, comfortable with financial reporting and budgeting. Working knowledge of social media tools, i.e., Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Familiarity with New York politics or social justice issues a plus. Good sense of humor essential.
