Meetings Should be Open in Pueblo

We got a call recently from one of our members down in Pueblo, Colorado. He was concerned that a group tasked by City Council to improve police community relations was meeting behind closed doors.

It looks like Council has given the Human Relations Commission stakeholders group (HRC stakeholders group) decision-making authority, but is not also requiring the meetings to be open as is required by Colorado law.

We sent a letter to Council today urging them to open up the meetings.

Government business has to be conducted in the open. Our open meetings laws become particularly important when such a contentious issue as police accountability to the community is on the table. The residents of Pueblo have a right to know about what is being done in their city council’s name.
