I grew up understanding that the greatness of our democracy is the difference of opinion and the ability to voice it freely. That’s why I’ve fought so hard throughout my life – as an actor, as head of the National Endowment for the Arts, as a peace advocate – to protect our freedom of speech and our civil liberties.

But I’m concerned about the direction in which our country is headed. I see too many fellow Americans afraid to criticize our elected leaders for fear of being labeled “unpatriotic,” “terrorist sympathizers,” or worse. We’ve become tolerant of corruption, illegal wiretapping – even torture! Where has our voice gone?
My vision for a “Fresh Start for Democracy” is one in which all Americans renew their commitment to their First Amendment rights. Where there is injustice, where there is hypocrisy, where there is abuse of power, we must speak out. We must use our words and our creativity to bring about real change. Our democracy depends on freedom of speech – but that freedom is only meaningful if we actually exercise it.
